Learn to Love Your Building's Boiler – Romance in the Boiler Room

Admittedly, when Rauw Energy was formed to market, sell and install the IntelliCon Fuel Economizer, I had zero understanding of what went on in a boiler room, even the one in my own home. I never really thought about it. Yearly maintenance was scheduled, a perfunctory look at the “box in the basement” once or twice a season was all it warranted but as long as I was warm upstairs, I just didn't think too much about how I got the hospitable climate.
Then, about 12 years ago, the Fuel Economizer came into my consciousness. This was a technology I could sink my teeth into. It is a fuel conservation device that saves money and reduces pollution. The way the Fuel Economizer works is really smart. Most boilers in use today are sized to provide heat to the entire structure on the coldest day of the year. Any other day, for instance a warm late March or April Spring day, the boiler is actually oversized and produces waste heat when it fires up and goes through its cycle. This waste heat either dissipates or goes up the flue. Through a computer algorithm and sensors placed at the boiler, the Fuel Economizer understands the needs of the building and dynamically adjusts the boilers response to those needs, holding off a firing if warranted. The boiler cycles less, using less fuel.
The fact that less fuel is burned results in significant reductions in CO2 and, in the case of oil-fired boilers, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and filterable particulates are reduced by as much as 40%.
