2009 Top 25 Cities With the Most Energy Star Labeled Buildings

Provided by EnergyStar.gov, an environmental red carpet “Who’s Who” of cities not only concerned with ever escalating energy costs but also with the cost on the environment of doing business as usual. The information is shown by rank, the name of the metro area, the number of Energy Star Labeled buildings in 2009, the total floor space in million square feet, the cost savings in millions and the emissions prevented equal to the number of homes' energy use.

If we take a look solely at the emissions prevented, the top 10 cities are ranked as follows:

5. Washington, DC
6. Los Angeles, CA
7. New York, NY
8. Dallas-Fort Worth, TX
9. Atlanta, GA
10. Boston, MA

New York City seems to be getting a really big bang for its buck. When one considers the amount of money saved ($88.3 million) and the amount of emissions prevented (equivalent to the energy use of 31,800 homes), its 90 Energy Star Labeled buildings surpass #1 ranked Los Angeles’ 293 buildings, with $93.9 million in savings and the equivalent prevention of 34,800 homes’ energy use.

The average Energy Star Labeled Los Angeles building saves $320,000. The average New York Energy Star Labeled building saves $981,000. The average Los Angeles emission prevention is equivalent to 118 homes per building and New York’s emission prevention is equivalent to 353 homes per building. The reality is New York has the potential to make a massive impact on its dollar savings and its emission preventions by making necessary energy savings changes to existing buildings and new construction.
