Energy Star is Recognizable and Important
In 1992 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy founded the Energy Star label. As stated on the DOE website, Energy Star was “designed to identify and promote energy-efficient products to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” The Energy Star label has since been promoted and advertised through numerous venues and has come to be synonymous with energy efficiency, money savings and environmental consciousness.
A majority of Americans recognize the Energy Star label and are influenced by it in their purchase decisions. In the National Awareness of Energy Star for 2008 Analysis Household Survey, United States Environmental Protection Agency, conducted by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency, “Of households that recognized the ENERGY STAR label (aided) and purchased a product in a relevant product category within the past 12 months, 73 percent purchased an ENERGY STAR-labeled product.” Of these consumers, 53 percent responded that the Energy Star label influenced their decision “very much.”
According to the DOE website, in 2007 alone, by purchasing Energy Star products, “consumers prevented greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those from 27 million vehicles.” The DOE calculated that these purchases translated into a dollar savings of “more than $16 billion” to consumers.
The Energy Star label has become a successful guidance tool that not only has proven to save consumers money, it reduces energy and decreases carbon loading, aiding in the fight against global climate change.
