iPhone Has an Environmental App for That
Gaiam.com recently listed iPhone apps geared to helping bring out the green in all of us. Gaiam’s picks include the following:
- Go Green (free) – read tips on things you can do to go green.
- Find Green (free) – GenGreenLife.com has a directory of over 65,000 green businesses to help you find everything you’re looking for.
- Seafood Watch (free) – An iPhone app that helps you learn whether that fish you’re considering buying for dinner is more or less sustainably raised and caught. It also includes regional guides so you can make the best choices for the area of the country you’re in.
- GoodGuide (free) – Want to know how the company that makes the product you’re considering buying holds up as far their environmental and labor practices? Scan the bar code and pull up the product’s and company’s scorecard.
- MeterRead ($.99) – This tool helps you understand and track your electricity usage by teaching you how to read your meter and input your own readings on your own schedule to see if you’re improving week to week or day to day.
- iTrans ($.99 to $3.99) – If you live in New York, Los Angeles, Washington, DC, Chicago or London or have access to the Caltrain, Chicago Metra, LA Metrolink, PATH and New Jersey Transit, this app makes it easier to use public transportation by showing you the fastest route between any two stations on the subway system.
- Carticipate (free) – If public transit is not viable, Carticipate helps you find carpools and set up rideshares with people you know and groups you belong to.
- Carbon Tracker (free) – Tracks your carbon usage on trips you take including commutes, vacations and business trips. This app gives you the ability to set footprint goals and calculate your carbon usage using different modes of transportation.
- iRecycle (free) – find over 110,000 recycling locations for over 240 materials, including directions, maps and hours of operation.
