Public and Private Entities Working to Reduce Fossil Fuel Consumption
Even without a robust U.S. energy policy, the private and public sector are moving ahead and showing growth in alternative energy and energy conservation markets.
According to the American Wind Energy Association, “The U.S. market for small wind turbines gained ground in 2009.” With strong markets in the Mid-West, the North East and California, the AWEA estimates there are over 100,000 small wind turbine installations in individual homes, farms and small businesses across the country, generating approximately 100 megawatts of energy combined.
In the public sector, the New York Power Authority is seeking private-public solar partners interested in having solar arrays installed either on roofs or on the ground at “municipal facilities, public and private schools and government buildings throughout the state.” The goal is to install up to 100 megawatts. In January 2010, NYPA issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a solar developer to install the arrays and is currently evaluating the proposals.
Additionally, the government agency, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, recently recognized privately-held Intellidyne LLC, the developer and manufacturer of the Fuel Economizer, as one of its Building Research Partners. NYSERDA’s Clean Energy Business Partners page states, “According to the United States Department of Energy, today’s buildings consume more energy than any other sector of the US economy, including transportation and industry. NYSERDA’s Buildings program has focused its efforts on helping to reduce this heavy impact on New York’s energy resources."
Both NYSERDA and New York City Public Schools (the schools have contracted to install 2,000 Fuel Economizer units on school boilers) recognize the power of conservation and the power of the Fuel Economizer as an important tool to help them conserve.
