Go To These Vendors For a Greener Planet
Making a concerted effort to have everything I buy count at least twice can be tricky. When buying presents I think about the person I’m buying the gift for while thinking about those who are benefiting from my purchase. Some things I like to think about are, 1. Is this product an organic product so no or little harm will come to the environment? 2. Does the producer of this product treat its employees fairly? 3. Will my purchase donate to an organization or group that is trying to help others and/or the environment? 4. Is this producer making sustainability efforts?
A resource to finding some of the answers to these questions is the EPA. Along with a myriad of reports and research findings, the Environmental Protection Agency recently announced this nation’s “Top 50 Green Power Organizations using the most renewable electricity.” Renewable electricity comes from sources such as solar, wind, low-impact hydro, geothermal, biomass and biogas. By using these resources it will lessen our nation’s reliance on coal and fossil fuels, two of the most polluting energy fuels. Switching to renewables also increases our nation’s security by diminishing our need for imported oil.
The top 10 “Green Power Organizations” on the Top 50 list are Intel Corporation, Kohl’s Department Stores, Whole Foods Market, City of Houston, Dell Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Cisco Systems, Inc., Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, U.S. Air Force, and the City of Dallas.
The EPA has partnered with over 1200 organizations, helping them to purchase over 17 billion kWh of green power, enough to “replace the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of 1.5 million American homes.” www.epa.gov/greenpower/toplists/top50.htm
